mandy hale best quotes

Every decision you make (or don’t make) today, leads to your tomorrow. While you can’t always control the circumstances in your life, you can certainly choose how you live each day and how you respond to your circumstances. Are you just letting your life happen to you? Or are you choosing your life?

Some people spend their lives like driftwood, floating along wherever each day takes them. Others seem to ride along in big ships that someone else is steering, but they don’t really know where they’ll end up.

In order to really know that your life is your own, try to find something in between these two scenarios. Picture yourself in a small vessel that you can steer by yourself and choose where it goes. A boat that is flexible, easy to adjust and navigate. One that has the capability to stand up to big waves and not be completely tossed about.

In order to be sure that you’re steering your own boat, consider these wise practices for your life.

Choose Your Priorities

If you don’t decide what is important for you, other people will. Choose what is most important in your life and make your to-do list based on that. If other people have things they want from you, check first to make sure their activities fit with your priorities. If they don’t, then say no!

Make Each Day Count

You don’t have to be on the go or working all the time. But be sure that each and every day you are doing something that “counts” toward what is most important. Is family a priority? Make sure you are taking time to interact with them each day. Is your career a priority? Decide what you are going to do today that helps you move forward instead of just punching a time clock.

Control Your Time

Do you ever get to the end of the day and wonder what happened to all of those hours? Stop frittering away your time—take control of it! Each of those 24 hours belongs to you. You get to decide how to spend them by making good plans and choosing wisely. Of course, you’ll need to be flexible but, ultimately, it’s your time and you can decide how to spend it.

Make sure that you’re driving your own boat when it comes to choosing your life instead of settling for it!

emmerson ralph quote

When we think about what it means to live, then we’re conceptualizing what it means to give. Life is not about how many trinkets or treasures we can hoard. It is about lifting up others so that we can speak in one harmonious chord.

We must do more than cheer the volunteer because it is up to each of us to lend a helping hand in our land.

And we must value our time just as much as our money; otherwise, the results we achieve are worse than breakfast eggs that are runny.

Because the entirety of our existence hinges on one concept that is simple, but always true. Unless we are helping others with hands that are steady, then our lives are in a position where they are always getting ready.

You see, whether you’re from South Africa or Albuquerque, the world is the same because we all live by the same name. We might identify ourselves through the borders that others make, but that does not give us the authority to take. We are human first, for better or worse, and we must not treat that condition as if it were a curse.

For you are my brother or sister here in this world. You have wonders and talents waiting for the right moment to be unfurled. And if you identify yourself in some other way too, then that is not a reason to stop loving you.

Instead of becoming stuck in the singularity of being the same, living life means that we are ready to play diversity’s game. Because what makes us different is what makes us stronger, allowing us to pursue life until we can go no longer.

If we allow our selfish pride to reside inside, then there is a window waiting for us to stare out to see others outside. And we will see them laughing, and helping, and enjoying each other’s company while our hearts are stuck in the cycle of lonely misery.

Now is the time to make a change. Open the front door, even if it feels strange. Then see what you can do to help someone who needs a helping hand, because if you make another life better, then you’re out there living life as planned.

Enjoy yourself chinese proverb

When you’re young, you may  feel like you have all the time in the world to enjoy your life. Just work hard for, oh, say, 50 years or so and then you can start having all the fun, right? No! Time passes so quickly—and it goes by even more quickly as you get older. It’s important to live each day to the fullest right now, because you just don’t know how long you have.

So how can you enjoy yourself in meaningful ways? It’s easy when you apply these principles:

Be happy with yourself today. Don’t wait for your circumstances to make you happy. Instead of searching for something outside of yourself that will satisfy you, look inward. Be happy with who you are at this moment. Take stock of what’s great about you on the inside, and then your outside circumstances won’t have the power to define you.

Choose satisfaction. Stop chasing the dream of “someday” and just be thankful for what you have today. You’ll be less likely to have your joy spoiled by jealousy or envy of something someone else has! Instead, you can live your life in simplicity with what you already have.

Always be willing to laugh. One of the best ways to enjoy your life is to stop taking yourself so seriously! Give yourself over to a chuckle now and then when something goes wrong. Did you spill coffee down the front of your shirt before the big meeting? Don’t get stressed—learn to laugh at yourself. Once you really see how silly the little things in life are, you’ll lead the way in laughter. And others will want to follow along!

Simplify your life. Let’s be honest—life can get away from us and quickly become a rat race. Learn to take it easy and breathe a bit more by simplifying your home. Sometimes stuff can begin to own us instead of us owning our stuff! Be intentional about getting rid of objects and only let new things enter your home that you actually need or love.

Build in margins. Leave “white space” in your calendar just to enjoy yourself. Walk home through the park instead of catching the bus. Get a massage or a manicure. Schedule in time to do what you enjoy on a regular basis. You’ll be so much happier for it!

4.

joseph campbell quote

Life can feel like a bundle of unfulfilled dreams. Each day may offer an opportunity for success, but it so often becomes more like a terrible mess. Missed chances can eat away at the core of one’s heart until it feels like there will never again be a new start.

Regret can be a powerful motivator to dissipate fear, but it can also be the tool that helps it to come near. Because when we fail and then struggle to rise again from the ashes, all we have left are moments that go by in flashes.

It can cause you to feel numb, to feel pain, and it can even cause shame. Feeling like a failure can make it so that you are never the same. And if you live in this existence for a little too long, this emotion can cause you to stop singing life’s song.

What we often forget is that when one dream stops, another can begin. A bigger, better idea that can leave you with a broader grin. We must take the lessons of what we’ve lost to apply them to what we have now found to once again lift our spirits up off of the ground.Rare is the life that goes according to every plan, even if you had a complete outline ready before you began. Instead of trying to pursue what refuses to come to you, now is the moment to let go and let the currents of destiny flow.

You will discover that the life waiting for you is more significant than what your imagination could ever believe could be true. Your soul is fantastic, amazing, with hope always blazing. Embrace this fire to see what is lying in store, and you will discover the joy that comes when you start living life more.

Every dream is adaptable, and each goal actable. Life is compatible because new moments are graspable. Letting go of the life you’ve planned might seem radical, but an embrace of reality shows that it can be practical.

That’s not to say that you should just give up – not at all! You should pursue each dream until the stars come out at nightfall. Maybe you’ll find success, or perhaps not, but your life is waiting to be lived with everything that you’ve got.

wayne dyer quotes

Looking toward the future can be exciting—but it is also a serious gamble! You just don’t know what will happen tomorrow. No one does. The only moment that we are guaranteed is this one. So, it’s up to us to make the most of it and live each day as if it were our last.

If you have been coasting through life on autopilot, without paying a whole lot of attention to each moment, then it may be time for you to simply wake up! Here are some of the ways I have found are effective in “waking up” to my life.

Consider ways that you can apply these principles to your life today:

Prepare for tomorrow but live for today. Setting goals and making plans is an important part of achieving what we want out of life. It is certainly wise to keep the future in the backs of our minds so that we aren’t surprised when it shows up. But we need to make sure that we aren’t letting our future plans take over our ability to live for and enjoy this present moment. Because that future just isn’t a guarantee.

Don’t worry about tomorrow. Sure, you can go ahead and make your plans for the future. But if you’re spending time anxious and worried about what is going to happen in the future, then you’re simply using up your energy. You don’t have a limited supply of energy, so don’t waste it on worrying! Instead, redirect your focus and invest that energy into enjoying what today has to offer.

Live deeply and richly today. Look for the good, enjoy what you have, and learn to appreciate the simple things in your life. When you do this, you’ll overcome a whole myriad of woes and find yourself living in satisfaction and fulfillment for today, without having to worry about what might happen in the future.

Create your own inspiration. Many people sit around waiting to be struck by inspiration and motivation before they actually get up and do anything. But if you really want to get something done, then you’ll need to go for it—now. Don’t wait for inspiration to strike you. Instead, muster up some volition, look inside of yourself, and find the motivation you need to go for it!

bruce lee quotes

If you’ve spent your life under the tyranny of trying to please others, then you know how quickly expectations can become a trap. Even if the expectations come from people you love, life can quickly  turn into a journey of difficulty, frustration and heartache when you lose the plot.

You Don’t Have to Please Others

You were not put on this earth to please everyone. In fact, it would be impossible for you to do so because you are a limited creature. You’re human. If you spend much of your time trying to make everyone else around you happy, while sacrificing all of your own desires in the meantime, then it’s time to make a change!

Sure, there are certain places in life where you need to live up to expectations. The IRS expects you to pay taxes. Even your boss may be allowed to have certain expectations of you (after all, he signs your paycheck). But even in employer relationships, you have the power to communicate your needs and ask  your boss for reciprocation as well.

On the other hand, if your neighbor expects you to cat-sit every weekend (even though you’re allergic) or your grandma expects you to drop everything and come to her house across town to change the batteries in her remote control before her favorite show comes on—you don’t have to! You have the freedom to say no or tell someone to wait until it fits into your timeline. You can spend more time balancing out what you do for others with what you do for yourself.

The Road Goes Both Ways

Bruce Lee put it well when he said, “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.”

Take a moment for self-reflection and try to determine if there are places in your life where you may put undue or unrealistic expectations on others. When you hold your relationships up to a mirror, you may see that you’ve also been placing burdens on those you love by expecting them to live up to your desires instead of their own. Recognizing this, asking for forgiveness and correcting your behavior can go far in restoring damage that may have been done to relationships in the past.

You have the power to communicate with others, decide if their expectations fit with your desires, make agreements, and give yourself room to live your own life. Only you can make those choices for yourself!

  1. I particularly like “go for it now, the future is promised to no one” this is so true – always follow your dreams – not everyone gets the chance

  2. Love these. One of my favourite quotes is “pardon me for living, but this is my world too” – Prince Rogers Nelson

  3. I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine. This is so deep and while it’s the first time I read this quote, I live by it every day and it’s so empowering. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Quote 6 is my favorite. I agree, you don’t have to please everyone. I think we often feel like that’s the goal, especially in leadership, but you will never be able to do that. There will always be someone or some people who are unhappy about the decisions made, even though it is the best decision or sometimes does not even effect them.
