9 Examples of the Biblical and Spiritual Meaning of Snakes in Dreams

Now the serpent was craftier than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. Genesis 3:1 (ESV)

The Bible has over 100 verses that specifically mention serpents or snakes.

Some versions describe them as being cunning, while others offer the interpretation that they are a representation of evil.

Snakes are seen as being tricky or deceitful. That makes them closer to your enemy than a friend.

Even so, Jesus mentions that snakes have positive attributes in Matthew 10. Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Did you recently have a dream about snakes?

Are you wondering what the spiritual connection to that message might be?

Snakes as a Symbol for Good vs. Evil

The most common association with snakes in the Bible is that of Satan.

Even when the serpent gets mentioned in Genesis, some scholars believe that the reference is to the enemy of God more than it is an actual conversation between Eve and an animal.

You might say that it was Satan dressed as a serpent to seduce Eve into sinning.

If you have dreams that include snakes, then the symbolism of the surrounding components helps to give more definition to the experience.

Fighting a serpent in your dream provides a different message to consider than merely seeing them pass by as you follow a different narrative.

Seeing dead snakes can mean something entirely different than encountering ones that are alive.

That’s why it is essential to write down everything you can remember about your dream as soon as possible.

Specific details can help you to determine what, if any, Biblical or spiritual meaning exists.

What Could My Dream About Snakes Mean?

Most dreams about snakes are innocent in nature.

Dream states often work to make sense of the things we’ve seen during the day.

When you watch a television show or movie that includes this animal, then you’re more likely to have them appear when sleeping.

There isn’t a deeper meaning to the dream itself.

Your brain is organizing the information you obtained throughout the day, like your computer defragments a drive.

Some elements of symbolism in a dream can be a potential message with Biblical or spiritual implications.

Did you notice any of these elements while dreaming?

#1. The snake sheds its skin.

Snakes shed their skin through a process call ecdysis.

It allows for additional growth to occur because the outer layer is very inflexible.

It is also a way to get rid of any parasites that may have attached themselves to the body.

If you see this event happen in a dream, then it can be a message of renewal.

Even though the Bible associates snakes with betrayal or danger, this specific circumstance can be an indication that you’re ready for a new start in life.

You are casting aside the old self to embrace a new beginning.

If you see a black snake in your dream, then you should approach life’s circumstances with a higher degree of caution.

When this serpent sheds its skin, it can show how something negative in your life transforms into something closer to evil.

Imagine that you have a friend that annoys you with terrible jokes.

The next time you see this person, you decide to punch them in the face to shut them up.

That’s a representation of a black snake shedding its skin.

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21:5).

You can be renewed spiritually at any time.

If your dream involves snakes shedding their skin, then you might be ready for a reset.

#2. You are fighting a snake in your dream.

If you found yourself fighting a serpent in your dream, then this action could mean that you have a crucial decision to make in life.

You might be procrastinating on it because of what will happen after you move forward.

As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11, But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

You might wonder if a choice you need to make is spiritually healthy.

It could feel like there isn’t a favorable decision you can make.

These tend to be the triggers that cause people to start battling with snakes in their dreams.

From a Biblical perspective, the goal of faith should be to walk as close to the path outlined by Jesus as possible.

That means beginning with a right heart.

Jesus told us in Matthew 22 that all of the law hangs on loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

If your spiritual thoughts do not center themselves on what you feel is the driving force of your faith, then your dreams may continue to include a battle against snakes until you resolve this conflict.

#3. You see lots of different snakes in your dream.

Whether you consider yourself a Born Again Christian or someone who is naturally spiritual without a label, our perspectives of faith are under constant bombardment.

As we live and grow within our beliefs, some changes must occur that put our attitudes to the test.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13 that when I was a child, I spoke as a child. I understood as a child. I thought as a child. When I became a man, I put away childish things.

Having snakes in your dream can be an indication that it is time to evolve your perspectives of faith.

You might feel like your spirituality is under direct attack by society, or it might be an indication that you encountered a new truth that puts your faith into a different light.

If you feel that your faith is being tested, then the first step is to seek spiritual guidance.

Trusting God’s will or your own approach is challenging when we’re not sure about the purpose of our circumstances.

Faith is the subsistence of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1).

Find your spiritual strength by reading the Bible. Seek out the spiritual or holy books that provide you with peace.

Above all else, be strong and of good courage.

The resilience that you learn today will help you to be incredible tomorrow.

#4. You are being hurt by the snakes in some way.

And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” So, the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, and many of the people of Israel died. (Numbers 21:5-6 NKJV)

The term “fiery” is not likely literal.

It is more of a description of the poison that the snakes delivered when biting.

It is also essential to see that the serpent is used here to describe a form of punishment.

When the people of Israel were ungrateful, tired, and ready to quit, they complained to God about their circumstances.

The serpents were sent as a reminder of their “sin,” or the bad choices they’d been making.

If you feel like you are being unjustly punished for something, then you might encounter snakes in your dream.

It is not unusual to have them trying to bite your feet under these circumstances.

These dreams often feel like nightmares.

Even if you don’t get bitten by the snake, the fear of having that happen can be enough to startle you away.

Think about the larger picture of your circumstances.

Could there be something that you’re missing with this spiritual message?

Is there hope that you can find when looking toward the future?

The solution for the Israelites was to look upon a bronze serpent set on a pole that God told Moses to make.

If the people of Israel gazed upon it, then they would live.

Many Christians would also say that about Jesus and the cross.

If you’re willing to ask for forgiveness, then spiritual healing can begin.

#5. You are speaking with the snakes in your dream.

Serpents might be trouble when you see them from a Biblical lens, but Jesus mentions that we should also look to them for lessons on wisdom.

Because snakes can shed their skin, some cultures see them as a symbol of immortality.

The serpent approached Eve, but then she went to Adam.

The Hebrew translation for “Adam” literally means “Earth.”

Think about the spiritual expressions we use still today.

Christians speak of “God the Father.” We also have “Mother Nature.”

One could say that the Bible is a reflection of humanity’s story to find its way on our planet.

When Eve spoke with the serpent, she wasn’t initially contemplating sin.

She was balancing the benefits of knowing the difference between good and evil with the instructions left by God.

If we take this story literally, Eve chose wisdom over immortality.

Adam made the same decision.

The quest for wisdom is something that still encompasses our faith and spirituality daily.

Paul writes in the Book of Hebrews, Therefore, let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God… (Hebrews 6:1)

If your faithful goal is to apply knowledge in skillful ways, then dreams about speaking with snakes are common.

#6. You are battling snakes when dreaming.

Snakes in dreams can be a symbol of your sexual desires.

Many spiritual people suppress this component of life because of the expectations placed upon them through their faith.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. (Ephesians 5:3)

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (Hebrews 13:4)

But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:28)

Temptations are everywhere. Snakes can appear in dreams when you are trying to overcome specific habits in your life that lead you away from a healthy existence.

How you feel about marriage and sex depends on your faith perspective.

You might be tempted more by food, video games, or explicit videos than physical intimacy.

When you don’t fulfill the innermost desires you have, then a snake biting you could be an indication that your subconscious wants you to stop.

It is up to you to determine if that decision is an appropriate one.

#7. You transform into a snake during your dream.

There can be dreams where people see themselves as a snake.

It can even be a transformative experience where you feel yourself turning into a serpent.

When this is what you dream about at night, then it is a representation of contempt.

You see yourself as the enemy to who you are.

It can mean that your faith is ready to evolve, but you are not prepared to accept what would happen under those circumstances.

Snakes tend to stay out of sight at all costs.

That makes them a mysterious creature, so viewing yourself as one can be a warning that something devastating is about to surface in your life.

#8. You are killing snakes in your dream.

If people were perfect, then we would be honest with each other at all times.

Far too often, the individuals who are our friends and family will take advantage of circumstances that they believe are valuable to them at our expense.

People will often “stab you in the back” to push themselves upward. This form of betrayal can be extremely bothersome.

When you have a dream about killing a snake, then you’re dealing with the rage that occurs when this betrayal occurs.

It can also represent the fears you have of something going behind your back to do something.

Killing snakes in your dream means that you’re ready to claim success.

You might be jealous or even deceitful yourself, but your quest is to be victorious.

You are trying to get rid of danger with this kind of dream about snakes.

When you look at this concept from a Biblical perspective, it is similar to the rebirth that’s promised when you believe in Jesus.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:10)

If you recognize the situation and can take positive actions to reverse your circumstances, then this decision can be represented in a dream when you kill a snake.

#9. You have snakes constantly trying to bite you.

Do not mix with winebibbers or with gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness with clothe a man with rags. (Proverbs 23:20-21)

When people struggle with addiction, it can consume everything in their life.

Seeing snakes in your dream can represent this battle when it involves you or someone for whom you care.

Further down in Proverbs 23, it says, Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly; at the last it bites like a serpent, and stinks like a viper.

When you encounter a situation such as this, then it is your mind telling you that now is the time to take action.

If you struggle with addiction in any form, then make the proactive choice to seek out the help you need.

If this applies to someone you love, then be the intervention that person needs.

Encourage them to look for options that can uplift them.

What If My Dream Doesn’t Fit into These Categories?

Dreams about snakes can take on several different meanings simultaneously.

The qualities of what you experience are often illustrations of how you feel about yourself at a core level.

A dream with serpents can represent something that you desire, but believe to be undesirable.

It is often a representation of some type of hidden fear or worry.

When you experience high stress levels, then the chance to experience a dream with snakes rises dramatically.

We can take a lesson from the Bible by seeing that snakes are usually the bringers of bad news.

Having them in a dream from a Biblical or spiritual perspective may represent a warning.

It can also be a reflection that you are seeking additional wisdom.

Dreams can mean many different things to everyone, so one event can carry multiple meanings.

If you still feel disturbed by what you experienced, then take time to pray, meditate, and seek guidance from a trusted spiritual mentor.
