How to Embrace Change [The Alchemy of Acceptance and Purposeful Change]

how to embrace change
God give me the grace to accept the things I cannot change, to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

The Serenity to Accept, the Courage to Change

This famous quote, known as the Serenity Prayer, contains profound wisdom that can guide us in living a life of greater peace, productivity, and fulfillment.

At its core, it teaches us to discern between the circumstances we can influence and those beyond our control, and to respond accordingly with acceptance or action.

Here are some key lessons we can derive from this powerful quote:

Embrace What You Cannot Change. There are certain realities in life that are simply out of our hands - the past, the behavior of others, natural laws, and many circumstances beyond our control. Railing against these unchangeable facts only leads to frustration, bitterness, and wasted energy.

The path to serenity lies in developing the grace to accept these things with equanimity, without inner resistance or angst. This acceptance isn't passive resignation, but an empowered choice stemming from wisdom.
Summon the Courage to Change What You Can. While there are immutable aspects of reality, there is also a sphere of influence where we can create positive change through our thoughts, words, and deeds.

This could include our habits, attitudes, relationships, skills, goals, and immediate surroundings. The quote encourages us to muster the courage to proactively improve these aspects of our lives through purposeful action and effort.

Positive change rarely happens by chance; it requires courage, discipline, and deliberate intent.
Cultivate the Wisdom to Know the Difference. Perhaps the greatest challenge lies in developing the discernment to distinguish between what we can and cannot change.

This wisdom comes from self-awareness, objectivity, and a deep understanding of our true sphere of influence. It involves knowing when to accept with grace and when to take constructive action.

Overestimating our power leads to futile struggles; underestimating it leads to lack of growth. The "wisdom to know the difference" empowers us to invest our precious energy optimally.

By applying the principles of this timeless quote, we open the door to a life of greater peace, authenticity, and effectiveness. We cease exhausting ourselves in battles we can’t win while boldly shaping the aspects of our lives that are ours to change.

In doing so, we experience the serenity that comes from acceptance and the empowerment that comes from courage – a profound alchemy that leads to a life well-lived.

Two Things to Reflect On:

  1. Identify one aspect of your life that is currently causing you frustration or angst, but that you realistically have no control over (e.g. someone else’s behavior, a past event, etc.). What would it look like to fully accept this with grace?
  1. Think of one habit, personal trait, or area of your life that you DO have the power to change or improve through your own efforts. What’s one courageous step you can take towards that positive change?

Two Questions to Ask Yourself:

Am I wasting precious energy resisting or anguishing over circumstances that are truly unchangeable? How can I reframe my perspective to one of wise acceptance?

What’s something I’ve been putting off working on or improving, even though it’s within my capability to change? What’s holding me back from taking action?

(use these two questions as journalling prompts)

Three Things to Practice This Week:

    1. Accept one unchangeable situation with a spirit of non-resistance. Catch yourself whenever you start to react with frustration, and consciously choose to accept it with equanimity.
    2. Identify a changeable area and take one concrete action step, no matter how small, towards positive change.
    3. Notice when your thinking falls into patterns of overestimating or underestimating your ability to create change. Pause and realign your perspective with wisdom.
