Self-care Sunday is about prioritizing your well-being. Take time to recharge with activities like yoga or spa treatments. Whether it's a brief 10-minute meditation or a full day of hiking, do what makes you feel good. Make self-care Sunday a routine and start the week feeling refreshed and ready to tackle anything.
Self care should be a regular practice of doing what makes you feel like yourself. It’s a practice of remembering who you are. Kendra Adachi

If you’re here that means that you take self-care seriously and you would like to know what you can do to improve your well-being. Great! Taking care of yourself is very important and it’s not selfish at all.
But why would you even consider doing this? Why Sunday?
I think self-care Sundays or Saturdays or both are very important. Of course you should take care of yourself every day but on the weekends when you usually have more time you should pay more attention to it.
The Importance of Self-Care Sundays
Today we all live in a fast-paced world, we often forget about ourselves because we focus mainly on our responsibilities and we really need at least one day a week when we can recharge our batteries and in this way prepare for the week ahead.
It’s important to refresh your mind, body and spirit from time to time.
In this article I will focus only on a few specific self-care ideas promoting self-reflection, such as journaling, mindfulness, spending time in nature and practicing gratitude.
Of course there are many more things you can do during a self-care Sunday, but it’s up to you what you choose for yourself!
Before I proceed to describing self-care ideas that in my opinion are really good for a self-care Sunday, let’s quickly have a look at some key benefits of practicing self-care.
Reduced stress: if you engage in enjoyable activities which you like they will help you lower your stress levels. Your outlook on life will be more positive. Better sleep: Your sleep quality will get improved if you take care of your body and mind by engaging in calming activities. Improved focus: By taking a break from your daily routine and responsibilities you enhance your ability to concentrate and make better decisions during the week. Enhanced emotional well-being: Self-care activities will help you feel happier, improve your mental health and emotional stability.
Why is Self-Reflection an Important Aspect of Self-Care?
Why have I chosen self-reflection for a self-care Sunday?
Of course you can spend your Sunday in a very active way, you can go running, swimming, you can go to the gym or do many other things which you like.
However I like self-reflection especially on a Sunday as it allows me to pause and examine my thoughts and feelings.
Thanks to the self-reflection I gain a deeper understanding of myself.
Self-reflection on a self-care Sunday will give you a chance to evaluate your emotional and mental state and this in turn will help you reduce stress, achieve better mental clarity and create a more balanced life.
Here are a few techniques promoting self-reflection that I highly recommend to try out!
Journaling
Does it happen to you from time to time that your head is so full of thoughts and you experience so many different feelings that you feel lost and don’t know where to start?
This is when journaling can help you! It’s an effective way to get out all of those feelings and thoughts from your head and onto paper.
Journaling reminds a private conversation with yourself!
When you journal, you can write about anything you want. You can write about your day, your dreams, your fears, or your goals.
During this process you have the time to think about what’s happening in your life and how you feel about it. You can also look back at what you’ve written and learn more about yourself.
I think journaling is a great way to reflect on your life and your experiences. It’s like looking in a mirror and seeing yourself more clearly.
You can use your journal to understand your own patterns of behavior, identify areas for personal growth, and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
However journaling isn’t just about self-reflection. It’s also a tool for problem-solving. By writing down your thoughts and feelings, you can come up with new ideas and solutions to challenges you may be facing.
As you can see journaling is a powerful tool not only for self-reflection, but also for personal growth.
So why not give it a try on a self-care Sunday morning or evening?
Another self-care technique that I recommend for a self-care Sunday is mindfulness.
Mindfulness
Why mindfulness?
Because it’s important to focus on your own needs and well-being and mindfulness is a powerful tool for doing just that.
Thanks to the mindfulness practice you will learn to be more present in the moment and less focused on worries or stressors.
It’s a great way to slow down and pay attention to what’s happening right now and slowing down is what you need to do on a self-care Sunday.
During the mindfulness practice you focus on the present moment without judgment. You can focus on your breath, the sensations in your body or the sounds around you.
Here’s how you can practice mindfulness on a self-care Sunday.
Mindful eating: Eat slowly paying attention to the taste, texture and aroma of the food. Focus on each bite and savor the experience of eating. Mindful movement: If you exercise, for example you do yoga, then pay attention to each movement and sensation in your body during your practice. Focus on your breath and the way your body feels as you move. Mindful walking: Take a walk outside and try to pay attention to different things happening around you. Focus on the sights, sounds and your sensations. Notice what you feel when your feet touch the ground and pay attention to the movement of your body as you walk. Mindful breathing: Simply focus on your breath. Take slow and deep breaths focusing on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of your body. Your mind will wander from time to time. Don’t worry about it and gently bring your attention back to your breath. Mindful coloring: Get yourself a coloring book or print out a coloring page and start coloring focusing on the colors and patterns as you color. Try to be fully present during the process of coloring, try not to think of anything else.
Spending Time in Nature
Here’s why spending time in nature can be an excellent self-reflection exercise to do on a self-care Sunday.
First of all nature provides a peaceful and quiet environment thanks to which you can disconnect from the distractions of your everyday life and focus on your thoughts and feelings.
Nature has a calming effect on people’s minds and bodies, it can reduce stress and anxiety levels. It will help you to relax and will make you more reflective.
This relaxation that nature provides allows us to engage in self-reflection and introspection, which can be difficult in our fast-paced, technology-driven world.
Nature stimulates creativity and problem-solving skills – it will help you think more deeply about yourself and your experiences.
Finally nature can provide a new perspective on life and the world around you. This can help you gain a fresh outlook on your own experiences and challenges.
Several tips on how to incorporate spending time in nature into your self-care routine.
1. Go for a walk in the local park or nature reserve. 2. Visit a beach or lake and spend some time near the water. 3. Go on a hike. 4. Spend some time gardening or tending to plants. 5. Go on a camping trip. 6. Participate in outdoor activities such as rock climbing, cycling or kayaking.
If you live in a rural area you shouldn’t have a problem with finding a peaceful place to go to in order to spend some time in nature on a self-care Sunday.
Practicing Gratitude
Think for a while now, how often do you express gratitude in your daily life? How often do you appreciate what you have? How often do you notice that you’re a really lucky person?
I suppose not often and that is why during a self-care Sunday you should take some time to practice gratitude and finally start being grateful for all the good things in your life.
I know it may not be easy to focus on the good things in your life when you’re miserable and unhappy, but thanks to practicing gratitude you have a chance to see that there are positive aspects to your life even if they seem small or insignificant.
Benefits of Practicing Gratitude For Self-Reflection
Practicing gratitude can help shift your focus from what you lack to what you have and thanks to this you have a chance to experience greater feelings of contentment and satisfaction.
Expressing gratitude will help you cultivate a more positive outlook on life which is very useful during difficult times and what’s more by focusing on what you are grateful for you will gain perspective and a deeper understanding of yourself and your priorities.
Gratitude practice is a valuable tool during self-reflection because it helps you look at your life in a positive way.
You focus on the positive aspects of your life and experiences. You intentionally look for things to be thankful for and appreciate and in this way you’re developing a more positive mindset.
Here are a few tips for incorporating gratitude into your self-care routine:
1. Start a gratitude journal – it’s probably the simplest and the best thing you can do. Each day write in the journal a few things you’re grateful for. 2. Every day think about for a while about the things you’re grateful for. 3. Share your gratitude with others by expressing thanks and appreciation. 4. Use visual reminders, like sticky notes or a gratitude jar, to help you remember to practice gratitude. 5. Practice mindfulness – it will help you stay focused on the present moment and appreciate what is around you.
Remember that practicing gratitude is a simple but powerful way to boost your mood and overall well-being.
You don’t need to have any special skills or use any special tools to do it, you only need a willingness to shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life.
So why not give it a try on a self-care Sunday! If you’ve never done it before you should give it a go!
Of course you don’t need to do any of the things that I mentioned above. It’s your self-care Sunday so you decide how you want to spend it and what activities you want to engage in.
If you love spending your time in an active way and you know that it gives you pleasure and a peace of mind then go for it.
Below I listed some of the self-care activities that you can do on a self-care Sunday if you’re not interested in the ones that I have already described.
Remember, the best activities for a self-care Sunday are those that let you relax, rejuvenate and prioritize your own well-being.
1. Take a relaxing bath 2. Read a book 3. Practice yoga or stretch 4. Connect with loved ones or friends 5. Cook yourself a healthy meal 6. Take a nap during the day 7. Engage in a creative activity that you enjoy 8. Listen to music. Allow yourself to fully immerse in the experience and let the music soothe your mind and body. 9. Take a break from technology (digital detox) 10. Give yourself a self-massage 11. Try to spend more time with your pets 12. Engage in a hobby that you enjoy: knitting, gardening, playing an instrument 13. Spend time in silence 14. Practice visualization 15. Run, swim or workout at the gym 16. Do nothing in particular
Choose activities that resonate with you. You’re the only person who knows best what you like doing.
My Sundays usually look the same, but sometimes I decide to do something else than I did a week before, for example instead of running I go swimming, or instead of meditating I do breathing exercises, and sometimes I just do nothing special.
Creating a Self-Care Routine
First of all you need to assess your current self-care habits and decide what areas need improvement. Take into account different aspects of your life such as sleep, nutrition, exercise and relaxation.
Next you will need to create a list of activities that you enjoy or find calming. These should include things that make you feel good and are beneficial to your overall well-being.
Once you create a list of your activities, schedule them throughout your Sunday. Make sure that you give yourself enough time for each activity and remember to arrange them in an order that makes sense to you.
Be flexible and let your routine evolve over time based on your needs.
Finally, try not to think of any responsibilities that can wait until after your self-care day. Sunday is your day during which you focus on you and your well-being.
And don’t forget that consistency is very important, regular practice will make self-care an enjoyable habit.
Self-Care is Not Selfish
A lot of people mistakenly view self-care as a selfish or indulgent activity, but the truth is that taking care of yourself is very important for your physical, emotional and mental well-being.
First of all by prioritizing self-care you can recharge your batteries, reduce stress and anxiety and simply improve your overall quality of life.
Secondly when you take care of yourself you are better equipped to take care of others. So it’s essential to help yourself first to be able to help others later.
And lastly self-care is not just about taking care of yourself in the moment, but also about investing in your future well-being.
So by practicing self-care on a regular basis you can develop habits that support your long-term health and happiness.
